Blackberry 7100g Price-Blackberry 7100g Review

Research In Motion (RIM) tries a new approach with the BlackBerry 7100g, compressing the phone to a more compact form and also transforming the standard QWERTY keyboard to a SureType one. The business functionality is largely the same, but sadly the biggest change in the phone is also the biggest problem as it will take you some time to get used to the new key layout.

The BlackBerry 7100g’s dimensions fit in at a snug 4.6×2.3×0.8 inches and the phone is a light at 115grams but a big let-down is the fact that the phone while aesthetically pleasing is very easy to scratch and in just a week or two of use you may notice the screen and its silver boundary start to scratch miserably. The screen itself is diagonally 2.1inches and can display 65000 colours at 240×260 pixels. The first thing you must wonder when you see the phone’s size is how RIM managed to fit a full QWERTY keyboard in to such a small form factor. The answer is SureType keys, which means that two letters are used per key with the phone automatically supplying you suggestions of words as you type much like the dictionary on Nokia phones, and the software performs admirably, but the keyboard is sure have quite a long learning curve with most users, which doesn’t help when you aren’t just typing messages but also full-length e-mails.

The BlackBerry 7100g features no expandable memory but does have 32 MB of onboard RAM and even though you might want to fill it up with images or such, you can’t because the integrated Bluetooth supports only headsets and no file transfers between systems. The speakerphone is also a much needed inclusion as is the search utility which lets you search through your calendar, messages, memo pad etc. As with all BlackBerrys the major draw here is push e-mail which allows you to receive e-mails almost instantaneously on up to 10 individual e-mail accounts and not surprisingly the device functions perfectly. The BlackBerry 7100g will last you for 4 days of talk-time and a week on standby. Other applications on the BlackBerry 7100g are limited with only one game and no media player or image viewer.

With a price of Rs.11999, the BlackBerry 7100g is a good buy as an entry-level Smartphone. If e-mail for you is a necessity and you need a phone that not just performs well but is also compact and lightweight, then the BlackBerry 7100g is right for you, provided you can acclimatize yourself to its slightly awkward keypad.
