The BlackBerry 7230 can be called Research In Motion (RIM)’s first successful coupling of PDAs and mobile phones. Launched in 2003, the BlackBerry 7230 features advanced e-mail capabilities customary in a BlackBerry along with some prudent design choices to avoid the stereotypical BlackBerry bulkiness.
The BlackBerry 7230 is 4.4 inches long and 2.9 wide but is a bit on the chunky side at almost an inch think. However the phone feels sleek and trim and also sports a nice 65000 colurs at 240x160pixel capable screen that is designed to increase battery life by reducing back-light usage even in direct sunlight. The full QWERTY keyboard features larger and more elevated keys which makes them feel extra responsive.
The BlackBerry 7230 focuses on its e-mail applications, and they are undoubtedly the best among Smartphones. Push e-mailing is here but it takes almost a full 10 minutes to receive. The e-mail attachment viewer lets you view any Word, PowerPoint or Excel document, but only view- you can’t edit them. Personal tools like calendar, task manager, alarm, calculator etc. are included but are not as fleshed out as in other same generation Smartphones. Being focused at executives and the like, multimedia features are completely absent- there isn’t even a speakerphone. Web browsing is easy to access but only at GPRS speeds which are undeniably slower than 3G, Wi-Fi or even EDGE and it plainly shows if you attempt to go past simple e-mailing to browsing bigger and more elaborate sites. The BlackBerry 7230 specifications state a talk-time of 4hrs and standby of up to 10 days which is solid in this category.
You’d be hard pressed to find the BlackBerry 7230 but if you can, at a price of between Rs. 5000- Rs. 10000, it makes a decent buy. With a good set of features and bonus points, the BlackBerry 7230 is one of the most perfect business oriented Smartphones.
