BlackBerry 7290 is the next in Research In Motion (RIM)’s 7200-series of BlackBerry mobile phones. The 7290 is aimed at business users and will definitely lose its appeal if you don’t fall in that category. But it definitely comes into its own as a Smartphone and is one of the best among its peers. Launched in 2005, the device may seem like an antique today, but it’s a good way to get started if you’re new to Smartphones.
The BlackBerry 7290 specifications are 4.5×2.9×0.9inches and it is a little heavy at 141 grams. The LCD screen is of 240×160 resolution and can display 65000 colours but, it appears under-lit even on the highest brightness setting (which itself is a battery drain). The key layout is intuitive and well arranged so that you can never blame it for a typo. The buttons found around the edges of the device are as standard the scroll-wheel and BACK button and the charging and IR ports also.
The BlackBerry 7290 is primarily a business phone and as such has no multimedia features to speak of apart from an archaic image viewer. The personal tools like memo pads, calendar, task list, alarm etc. are all here though. There are no expansion slots but there is 4mb of SD RAM and 32mb of flash memory which should be enough for any ringtones or wallpapers you want to store. Bluetooth is available, so you can connect headsets and the like but the ability to connect to other devices like a computer to back-up or sync your contacts is absent. Not surprisingly, the BlackBerry 7290’s forte is its e-mail features. It’s easy to configure and use and you can have e-mail forwarded to you from up to 10 e-mail addresses.
You may have trouble finding the BlackBerry 7290 but if you can it can be yours for a price as low as Rs. 10000 making it an inexpensive buy in the world of Smartphones. Though slightly out-dated and lacking a host of features you can find on most Smartphones in the market today, the BlackBerry 7290 can still hold its own with its focus on productivity enhancement and little else.
