Blackberry 8100 Pearl Price-Blackberry 8100 Pearl Review

The Blackberry 8100, from Research In Motion (RIM), is the first multimedia-ready Blackberry phone, featuring both a media player and a 1.3 megapixel camera. Nicknamed the Pearl due to the new trackball used for navigation instead of the standard scroll wheel, it was released in September 2006. The Blackberry 8100 is available in India with Vodafone, Reliance and Airtel. RIM has included a host of multimedia applications such as a music and video player, expandable memory and a map-application while still retaining features that have made Blackberry popular including the best e-mail capabilities amongst current Smartphone manufacturers.

The 8100 does away with other Blackberry stereotypes by being small, sleek, light and even eye-catching with shiny chrome finish. At only 4.2 inches long and 2.0 inches wide, the Blackberry 8100 is particularly small amongst Smartphones. Its also only 0.5 inches thick meaning unlike most Smartphones which require a belt attachment, this one easily slides into your pocket. The 8100 uses the new SureType keyboard, with 2 letters assigned per key. This may feel quite different at first, but given the small form factor, it’s an acceptable trade-off. The Blackberry 8100 specifications include an LCD screen that is capable of displaying 65000 colours at a resolution of 240X260 pixels.

The Blackberry 8100 features an average camera with basic size and quality options but surprisingly cannot record videos as most other Smartphones. The video and music player are efficient, supporting most major formats such as MP3, MP4, AVI, 3GP etc. The Blackberry 8100’s map application is pretty basic offering directions in a text based format to various local destinations, but for GPS functionality you would have to buy a Bluetooth GPS attachment. The Blackberry 8100 features Bluetooth but no integrated Wi-Fi although the internet is accessible with EDGE, which is an enhanced version of GPRS. The 8100 also features an attachment viewer which enables you to view any Word, PowerPoint or Excel attachments as well as JPEGs and other images in your mail. Battery life is good with up to 4hrs talk time and 15 days on standby. It can also play music for a straight 21hrs n video for 6hrs.

The Blackberry 8100 is a smart buy at a price between Rs.15000 to Rs.20000.Though nothing radical, the inclusion of myriad multimedia abilities coupled with Blackberry’s strength in e-mail and other business utilities make the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl an appealing phone for both businessmen and consumer alike.
