The original BlackBerry Pearl was launched in 2006 and even though its taken Research In Motion (RIM) a full year to bring out a CDMA version of it, the BlackBerry 8130 is worth the wait. It’s all thanks to the myriad new features and improvements that you’ll find here and some were definitely warranted.
The BlackBerry 8130 retains its predecessor’s good looks and trim profile of just 4.2×1.9×0.5inches which is surely a good thing. A 2.25inch LCD serves as the display and it can output 65000 colours at a sharp 260×240 pixels and even has a light sensor. The keyboard is the infamous SureType breed and sure enough it does take some time to get used to but overall, given the size of the phone it is an understandable choice by RIM. There are some minor changes, especially on the sides of the phone which now holds the memory card expansion slots as well as volume controls, headphone jacks and a quick launch button.
The BlackBerry 8130 features a 2.0 megapixel camera and for the first time, can also record video. Quality was average to below average especially in videos. The media player is functional and can play most frequently used formats but to store songs you’d have to get a memory card as 64mb can hardly be enough. There’s also an integrated GPS receiver that performs well and can provide text-based directions. Bluetooth helps you connect your headsets and you could even use your BlackBerry 8130 as a modem but it doesn’t support file exchange. E-mail has always been a forte of RIM’s mobile phones and they continue this in the BlackBerry 8130. It supports up to 10 e-mail addresses with the push e-mail feature and the attachment viewer and the BlackBerry Instant Messaging client round off the package. Battery life is an average 3 and a half hours talk-time and 9 days standby time.
The BlackBerry 8130 is available in India at Reliance for a price of Rs. 25000. The BlackBerry 8130 takes the style that the Pearl series was known for and also adds video-recording and GPS functions. Overall, the perfect mix of style and substance.
