BlackBerry 8700 is the latest entry in Research In Motion (RIM)’s BlackBerry series and with this one RIM has gone for a different course by supplying the 8700 in a variety of flavours such as the 8700c, 8700f, 8700g etc. The BlackBerry 8700g is the most popular and as such the review will be based on the same.
The dimensions of the Blackberry 8700g are 4.3×2.7×0.7 inches and the device weighs in at 135grams. It is, on the whole, on the bulkier size but if you’re used to any other BlackBerry mobile phone, the 8700g will feel no different. Its display has a much improved 320×240 mega pixel resolution and can display 65000 colours. Keyboard layout is also similar to its predecessors being full QWERTY but the build-quality of the keys in particular is not up to the mark and they’re also a little slippery.
The BlackBerry specifications also include an Intel processor which definitely enhances the phone’s performance. There’s 64mb of Flash memory and 16mb of SD RAM, but you won’t need the space anyway as there’s no media player or camera. You can however keep mp3 ringtones. Bluetooth 2.0 is on hand and internet is accessible through the EDGE (Enhanced GPRS) network. The phone also has the quad-band feature meaning you can use the phone anywhere in the world. The BlackBerry 8700g’s e-mail capabilities are one of its stand-out features and are quite easily the best reason to own a BlackBerry itself. The attachment viewer is very useful to check any presentations, spreadsheets, documents or images sent to you. The 8700g is also the first to support third-party Instant Messaging software like Yahoo, MSN and Google-Talk. Memo pad, calendar, task list etc., as standard, are all here. Battery life is a good 4hrs of talk-time and 14 days standby.
BlackBerry 8700g is also the cheapest BlackBerry you can buy at a price of just Rs. 10000 and is available in India at Airtel, Idea, MTNL and BSNL. The BlackBerry 8700g provides great performance with solid e-mail functionality and all at an affordable price.
