Launched in 2007, the BlackBerry 8800 is another attempt by Research In Motion (RIM) to blend business with fun. It’s the first in the 88XX line and with the BlackBerry 8800 RIM has tried to bring the consumer-appeal of the features in the popular BlackBerry Pearl to a more business-like QWERTY-type phone.
RIM has taken its experience in the stylish designing of the Pearl and implemented it in the sleek and smart chrome-laced finish of the BlackBerry 8800. The phone is quite the looker but its width does at times make it feel uncomfortable to hold. Its dimensions are 4.4×0.5×2.6 and it weighs in at just under 140 grams. The screen is a 2.5inch LCD that can display 65000 colours at 320×240 pixels. It features a light sensor that can adjust screen brightness based on lighting conditions where you are which is nifty, but the screen itself tends to be a smudge-magnet. Taking a cue from the Pearl again, the BlackBerry 8800 features a trackball but ditches the Pearl’s SureType for a full QWERTY keyboard which performs agreeably.
The BlackBerry 8800’s specifications are more consumer-oriented than many other BlackBerrys of its time and as such has a media player that can play a slew of formats in both audio and video. There’s also an image viewer though the lack of a camera takes away from this feature. Another interesting addition is the GPS receiver which you can use to get audio and text based directions to almost anywhere provided you have the proper software. In the wireless department you’ll find Bluetooth 2.0 which enables you to use any headset for talking wirelessly. But the lack of both 3G and Wi-Fi is a major gripe and limits you to internet browsing at EDGE ( Enhanced GPRS) speeds. Of course what would a BlackBerry be without e-mail and the BlackBerry 8800 has all the features like push e-mail, attachment viewers etc. The BlackBerry 8800 will last you for 5hrs of talk-time and up to 3 weeks on standby which is good for any mobile phone.
Available for a price of Rs.31999, The RIM BlackBerry 8800 is a comprehensive Smartphone with the bonus of multimedia features however it’s strong suit remains the e-mail options and professionals are best suited to buy it.
