Research In Motion (RIM)’s Blackberry 8830 is the latest in Blackberry’s 8800 series of phones. The big draw with this model is the dual mode feature, which means you can use the phone in either CDMA or GSM modes which is perfect for the executive globetrotter. The Blackberry 8830 was launched in India in September 2007.

The Blackberry 8830 features vintage Smartphone in the looks department, its black from top to bottom and is slim yet wide with dimensions of 4.4×2.6×0.5inches and a weight of around 120gms. The screen displays 65000 colours at 320×240 pixels in a full 2.5inches. The display can auto-adjust brightness based on light and displays colours and text well. The keyboard has a QWERTY layout but despite individual keys being raised, your fingers are bound to slip on the smooth upper surface.

The signature feature of the Blackberry 8830 is dual mode function that allows you to use the phone in any country regardless of the specifications of the network prevalent there be it GSM or CDMA. The feature is a dream for anyone who’s had to carry 2 separate phones just to ensure that you can stay connected abroad. Bluetooth 2.0 and a GPS receiver round out a good package that is also boosted by Blackberry’s acclaimed e-mail features. Multimedia functionality is present but as an afterthought only with no real depth to the media player as such, though the necessary playlist, shuffle, repeat and folder options are all there. Personal tools like memo, tasks, calendar etc are included as standard. Battery life is average giving 3.6hrs of talk time and 9 days standby. Voice clarity is good even though it does sometimes sound flat and robotic.

The Blackberry 8830 is a good buy at a price of Rs 24000 ad will suffice for all your e-mail and office needs and its dual-mode functions are perfect for the globetrotting professional.
