The latest addition to Research In Motion (RIM)’s already strong Smartphone line-up is the BlackBerry 8900. It was launched in early 2009 as the next generation Curve (the 8300 being the last model to hold that name). BlackBerrys are popular among professionals and executives particularly for its e-mail capabilities and this one too is at heart a Smartphone, but you’ll find good functionality whenever you just want to have fun too.

The BlackBerry 8900 has dimensions of 4.2×2.3×0.5inches and its sturdy build gives it a great feel. It’s also light at close to 100gms. The Blackberry 8900 specifications also comprise a 2.4inch screen which outputs 65536 colours at a resolution of 480×360 pixels. The display is vibrant and colours and text are reproduced sharply. The keys are well placed around both the edges, which have the mute, power, volume and other buttons, as well as the keyboard itself which is a full QWERTY type.

The Blackberry 8900 is primarily a business-oriented phone and as such you’ll find every tool you would need for the same. You can now not only view any PowerPoint, Excel or Word documents, but also edit the same in the Blackberry 8900 thanks to the new Documents to Go application. Also included are the mandatory personal tools like calendar, memo pad, task list etc. Web browsing is a breeze thanks to the new full HTML browser but access to the internet itself is possible through either Wi-Fi or EDGE as 3G is unavailable. The 3.2 megapixel camera is surely the best on a BlackBerry to date with video recording, flash, autofocus and an image-stabilizer. The media player is fully functional and can be used with a variety of formats. The GPS and quad-band functionality will both be desired by travelling executives and their inclusion is bound to be the deal sealer for them. Battery life is substantial at 5.5hrs of talk-time and up to 14 days standby.

For a price of Rs. 25000, the BlackBerry 8900 is available in India at Vodafone, Reliance and Airtel. The RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 is a substantial upgrade of the Curve series and offers good design, superior features, and trustworthy performance.
