With a shiny silver exterior, external LCD and clamshell design, the X700 flip phone looks great to use.
Opening the flip reveals a magnificent 65,536-colour LCD and a blue backlit keypad planned with the Symbian working system in mind. Running the Symbian operating system, the X700 smart phone comes with a group of applications pre-loaded and allows you to install other applications yourself. An application called Quick Office lets you form, edit and save basic Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents. It’s a basic suite where you can change fonts, colour and arrangement of text but not anything else.
Even though the X700′s camera is only VGA (640 x 480 pixels), it takes impressive pictures. A handy feature of the Panasonic X700 is the included flash next to the camera. Besides enlightening for night photos, you can control the light and use it as a torch through the Tools menu. Other tools include a calculator, notepad, voice recorder, to-do list and a converter — currency, time, length, temperature, power and velocity, to name a just few. Bundled on a CD is Panasonic’s PC Suite software that allows you to backup and return the X700′s data, counting ring tones, videos, pictures, applications and settings as well. Files can also be wirelessly transferred over Bluetooth, infrared and MMS or via the supplied USB cable straight to a computer.
We found 20 ring tones pre-loaded on the X700 that can be set as ring tones or message alerts. Remarkably, they aren’t the collection of plain tones normally found on mid-range mobiles but exciting 40-chord polyphonic tones. The battery life is average with 5 hours of talktime and 200 hours of standby time. The Panasonic X700 is available at a price of Rs.9000 in India. The Panasonic X700 may not really set the world on fire, but in this world of below average mobile phones, this one is surely worth a buy.
